Found family is one of the most beloved tropes in YA literature, and it fits right into this story about people who must stick together (literally) to stay alive.

The desperate urge to be free brings them together, and on their way to freedom they also find friendship. At heart, Seasons of the Storm is always about friendship, and how fundamentally different people find a way to support each other and lift each other up. The bond all the characters share remains the novel’s most remarkable and beautiful aspect. The writing style completely matches the tone of the book and helps the reader get absorbed in the story.

She keeps her prose simple and to the point, there is not much flowery language. Cosimano strikes a perfect balance between bringing the reader up to speed on the happenings and moving at a brisk pace through a suspenseful plot towards a powerful and enthralling finale. The readers are made aware of the intricacies of the magic system within the first few chapters, but not in a way that seems info-dumpy. The worldbuilding is solid and pretty straightforward. The narrative ping pongs between Jack and Fleur’s POV chapters as the fast pacing keeps the story flowing steadily and smoothly, never losing momentum. Cosimano wastes no time and jumps straight into action. The premise of the story is quite intriguing and well built, the setup fresh and unique. Jack is prepared to do anything to escape the seasonal cycle and run away with Fleur, but fleeing their master, a man who can see the future, turns out to be more of a challenge than he’d hoped. But it’s against the rules for different Seasons to touch, let alone be together. In a cruel twist of fate, he has fallen in love with her and strongly suspects that she reciprocates his feelings.

Cue a large time jump and we find Jack thirty plus years later but once again, he is dying. The story begins on a cold winter night when a boy named Jack dies, only to be resurrected by Gaia as a physical manifestation of the season winter. There were some elements in the story that almost convinced me to ignore the (quite long) list of shortcomings I made, but ultimately this was nothing like what the synopsis had led me to anticipate. Seasons of the Storm has been blurbed as perfect for fans of Maggie Stiefvater and Laini Taylor, and as an enthusiastic admirer of both their works, I had harboured high expectations of this book. And Ringo, the cat? They were in the dark. You know that crushing disappointment you feel when one of your most anticipated releases of the year lets you down? I am a living embodiment of that disappointment as I write this review. Rain streaming down the windows, babbling in the downspouts. Mary Stolz and Pat Cummings have each brought their unique talents to this lyrical tale about a magical, stormy night and a special relationship between grandfather and grandson. They have a wonderful time learning important new things about each other in a spirited conversation. Too early to go to bed, and with only flashes of lightning to see by, Thomas and his grandfather happily find themselves rediscovering the half-forgotten scents and sounds of their world. This lovely picture book is also a strong choice to share about overcoming fears. This could be a moment to be scared, but Thomas and his grandfather huddle with Ringo the cat on their porch and share stories in the darkness. Storm in the night-lights flicker out, rain streams down the windows.
